Annual Wellness Exam Q & A What is an annual wellness exam?

The annual wellness exam at Alameda OB/GYN is designed to help you lead your healthiest, happiest life. By performing a thorough analysis of your reproductive health once a year, Dr. Butt can screen you for common health issues, catching them early when they’re easiest to treat.

This yearly checkup is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have. Whether you’re entering menopause, are considering getting pregnant, or have another question on your mind, you and Dr. Butt can discuss your health during your annual wellness exam so that you have the information you need. Her goal is to help you feel empowered and in control of your gynecological health.

What should I expect during my annual wellness exam?

During your exam, Dr. Butt will take several preventive measures, screening you for a number of cancers that commonly affect women. She will also perform an annual physical to make sure you’re healthy inside and out.

Specifically, you can expect a breast exam (which screens for breast cancer) and a Pap smear (which screens for cervical cancer). Having these two quick tests performed keeps you in the driver’s seat of your health.

With these preventive measures, you can rest easy, knowing your body is being regularly checked for cancer. Plus, if your Pap smear comes back normal, you can generally wait three years before your next one. Dr. Butt takes the time to understand your personal and family medical history to put you on the right Pap smear schedule.

What happens if my Pap smear comes back abnormal?

If your Pap smear comes back abnormal, meaning unwanted cells were detected, Dr. Butt can offer you immediate treatment options. To start, she can perform a colposcopy. This quick procedure is very similar to a Pap smear, but it gives her a better look at your cervix.

If she sees anything abnormal, she can biopsy — or remove — that tissue. While some women find the biopsy uncomfortable, it shouldn’t hurt any more than mild cramps. The tissue that is biopsied can be sent to the lab for further analysis, so you and Dr. Butt can develop the best, most effective plan for protecting your health.
